A signal instrument produces sound character, so acoustic signals that convey a message.

Signal instruments are mainly constructed on the basis of loud music instruments.

Generally accessible signal instruments

This must be easy to handle and be safe in the function. A well-known example is the whistle, when a simple strong blowing into enough to a very loud, shrill and generate penetrating sound. Originally developed as a pure signal instrument, it is now used as a noise, rhythm and effect instrument and in children as a toy instrument use.

Sometimes, the sound generation is simplified by using electrical transformer to use so that only one switch has to be actuated. Thus, the remote control of the siren was made possible by the use of an electric motor.
