Sigwin von Are

Sigewin of Are, as Sigewin the Pious known ( † May 31, 1089 in Cologne), was from 1078 to 1089 Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Cologne.

Life

Sigewins origin and descent is not released.

Since the year 1076 he was Domdekan in Cologne. In 1079 he was confirmed by Emperor Henry IV as Archbishop of Cologne. He supported Henry IV in the Investiture Controversy. As a follower of Henry IV is only just above the bloody fray in 1080 to escape the White Elster.

1083 Sigewin announced as the second bishop of the peace of God against the feuds of his time. He built 1085 spent the collegiate church Maria ad Gradus again, consecrated them and provided them with various possessions. On May 30, 1087 he was crowned the 13-year old emperor's son Konrad in Aachen German king.

Sigewin died on 31 May 1089 in Cologne. He was buried in Cologne Cathedral. Shortly after his death, the epithet the Pious was granted.
