Sihl Valley

The Sihl Valley begins in the Alps in the canton of Schwyz. When Saaspass that leads from the upper Sihl valley into Klöntal, there is a Sihlseeli, a small lake, which is not traversed by the river Sihl. With the Lake Sihl, a reservoir in the canton of Schwyz, the Sihl is used for the generation of electricity for the Swiss Federal Railways. During the construction of the power plant two dams had to be built. The Sihl Valley extends to the gates of the city of Zurich. In Sihltal are the villages Biberbrugg, Sihlbrugg, Langnau am Albis, Knives and natural Sihl and the Langenberg Wildlife Park.

In Sihlbrugg crosses the main axis Zurich - train, a continuation of the Gotthard railway, the Sihltal. There, the branches of SZU belonging railway line from to Zurich. The Sihltal is also accessible by a two-lane main road, which also represents the main connecting axis of Zurich to the south ( train, Arth- Goldau, Gotthard). History

The laying of the Gotthard trade route from mule path and sea on the road ( construction of the Gotthard road in the 1820s ) and rail ( opening of the Gotthard Railway in 1882 ) resulted in Sihltal between Sihlbrugg and Zurich to major changes. The 1230-1830 Horgen on the Hirzel Höhi to Sihlbrugg leading mule trail was built by the 1856 and 1884 replaced as publicly stated Sihltalstrasse as well as the railway line through the 1897 opened Zimmerberg tunnel. This also led to the end of the timber floating, which was discontinued in 1866.
