Siirt ( Syro -Aramaic ܣ ܥ ܪ ܬ, si ʿ reth, Armenian Սղերդ Sġerd ) is a city in eastern Anatolia region of Turkey and has 135 350 inhabitants ( 2012). It is the capital of the province of Siirt. The license plates of the city and the province begin with the digits 56 The eponymous district of Siirt has a total of 145 784 inhabitants ( 2012).

History

In early Islamic sources Siirt is hardly mentioned, which probably was due to the low strategic importance. Siirt was sometimes referred to as part of Armenia or al - Jazeera and was an important center of Eastern Christianity.
