Sikasso

Region

Sikasso is a city in southern Mali. The capital of the Sikasso region with 225 753 inhabitants ( census 2009) is the second largest city in the country. It is located about 375 kilometers southeast of Bamako and 100 kilometers north of the border with Ivory Coast.

History

Sikasso was founded at the beginning of the 19th century by King Mansa Douala Traoré of Kenedugu. The city long remained a small settlement until King Tieba Traoré in 1877, raised the city became the capital of Kénédougou. Tieba built in 1887 a fortification wall around the city to repel the attacks of the Dyula and the French colonial army. The city was able to defend more than two years against the attacks.
