Sikorsky S-38

The Sikorsky S -38 in 1928 was the first amphibious aircraft, which was built by Sikorsky in larger numbers. Occasionally it was also called The Explorer 's Air Yacht.

Past Flights of S -38

  • Charles Lindbergh flew with Anne Morrow Lindbergh for PanAm South America and Pacific routes.
  • Newspaper publisher Robert R. McCormick flew commercial flight routes between North America and Europe.
  • John Hay Whitney, an investor of venture capital, used the aircraft for luxury travel.
  • The Flying Hutchinsons were the first family, who flew around the globe.
  • The film -maker Martin Johnson and Osa Johnson flew a zebra -colored S -38 " Osa 's Ark " for the exploration of Africa.
  • Herbert Johnson explored the carnauba in South America by plane "Spirit of Carnuba ". An airworthy Replikamaschine still exists today.
  • Howard Hughes bought an S -38 for his flight around the world.

One of the two still existing S -38 ( N28V ) was used in the movie The Aviator 2004. However, Hughes flew at that time actually an S- 43rd

In August 2010, crossed Tom Schrade of Las Vegas, Nevada in several stages over Greenland and Iceland the Atlantic. The plane with two reconstructed Pratt & Whitney engines of 400 hp was named Osa 's Ark and the Zebra painting of the aircraft from the 1930s.

Overall, probably 90 machines were built (other sources say 100). These were assembled in Stratford (Connecticut).
