Geography

The place Silbertal is a scattered settlement and is located in the westernmost province of Austria, Vorarlberg, the district of Bludenz to 889 m altitude in Silbertal in Verwallgruppe. The name comes from Silbertal copper and silver mining.

The municipality covers almost the whole Silbertal, the valley of Litz, a side valley of the Montafon. Only the lower end of Argent, the neighboring communities Bartholomäberg and Schruns, where the Litz enters the valley of the Ill divide. The valley has two smaller side valleys on the uninhabited upper reaches, the Gaflunatal with the Gaflunabach, and the Wasserstubental with the Burtschabach. In the Litz lead numerous other small streams. 31.7 % of the area is forested and 35 % are Alps.

Community structure

The municipality comprises only one cadastral and locality ( Silbertal ). In earlier work, we find the usual until the beginning of the 20th century spelling Siberthal. Locations are:

  • Silbertal, the main town, a scattered settlement with the districts Innertal and Außertal
  • Kristbergbahn, a scattered settlement on the south side of the valley, with the districts of Inner Kristbergbahn and out Kristbergbahn
  • Book, a scattered settlement east of Kristbergbahn, with the associated parts Unterbuchen, Oberbuchen and Inner Book.
  • Ganlätsch, Hoefle and Schoeffel, three small Rotten on the northern slope towards Außertal
  • Fellimännle to the inn valley, with the single layer in the Ree

Alps are the Alpguesalpe, Fanesklaaalpe, Fresch ( Lower Alpe Fresch ), Gisela, Gretsch, Kapell ( Innerkapell ) Käfera, Muttalpe, Lower and Upper Dürrenwald Alpe, Lower and Upper Gafluna, Lower and Upper water exchange, Platina, cleaning chamber, Rona, Stöfeli. The municipality is also the ( New ) Reutlinger hut.

History

Already years ago, more than 1,000 mining was operated here and the miners dug on the heights of the crystal mountain slope for silver, copper and iron. In favorable areas on the valley floor, the Romansch Hofjünger the court Bludenz settled.

The Silbertal was first settled by the Walser people had moved in the period 1100-1200. The first evidence provides a documented mention in 1319, and the consecration of the chapel in the Silver Mountain, by the Walser in the year 1332.

The whole area Silbertal - Bartholomäberg a mining area, dating back to prehistoric times, and in the Middle Ages had its final flowering. With the discovery of the New World about 263 tons of silver from the Americas was from 1520 to 1550 transferred to Europe, causing the silver price fell massively, and 15 tons / year financially was no longer wearing the mining in Silbertal with 0.5 tons / year and Schwaz and came to a halt.

Silbertal was a separate Walser Court seat until 1453, and came in 1420 along with the Montafon in Austria.

The Montafon had until 1806 on the legal basis of the Montafon country custom of a certain independence (since 1554 ). The Habsburgs ruled the areas in Vorarlberg changing of Tyrol and Further Austria from ( Freiburg im Breisgau). From 1805 to 1814, the village belonged to the Kingdom of Bavaria, then back to Austria. Since its founding in 1861 Silbertal belongs to ( the Austrian crown land, then state ) Vorarlberg. The place was from 1945 to 1955 part of the French zone of occupation in Austria.

On the forecourt in front of the parish church Silbertal, right before the cemetery wall, was from 1968 to 2009 the war memorial Silbertal to commemorate the fallen in the First and Second World Wars sons of the place. As part of a historical elaboration which also mentioned in the inscriptions of names of the fallen Nazi perpetrators Josef Vallaster the monument of the church was removed in June 2009. Instead of the previous war memorial now a memory space to be created.

Policy

The municipal council consists of 12 members. The composition of the 2010 election is ÖVP 7 seats, 3 seats FPÖ and SPÖ 2 seats. Mayor Thomas Zudrell.

Coat of arms

Blazon: In the blue shield a golden key to the right with a silver hammer crossed. The main shield is divided by red and white and topped with three five-pointed stars in alternating colors.

  • The bar with the three stars is taken from the coat of arms of Valais and refers to the settlement of the valley in the early 14th century by the Walser.
  • The golden key is for the membership of the Montafon ( Montafon Arms).
  • The Silver Hammer is reminiscent of the silver mining on Krist mountainside.

Economy and infrastructure

In the village there were in 2003, 13 companies in the industrial sector with 61 employees and four apprentices. Taxable wage -employed, there were 399

Tourism and tourism are important. In the tourism year 2001/2002 there were a total of 82 226 nights.

Kristbergbahn

The Kristbergbahn leads from Silbertal to about 1,430 meters high - is inhabited all year - the district Kristbergbahn with Kristbergsattel, an old footpath crossing to Dalaas. There is a small ski resort. In the south is a connection to the ski resort Silvretta Montafon, the merger of the Silvretta Nova ski lifts and the ski area Hochjoch Schruns ..

Education

1949, the now vacant, one-room schoolhouse in Silbertal - Book was built, it was only until 1959 in operation. Starting from 1835 Kristbergbahn education was at the elementary school einklassigen granted. The school is in the middle on Krist mountainside. This school was closed for lack of students in 2003. In the resort there are (as of January 2003) 64 students. In Silbertal there is also a kindergarten.

The Montafon Silbertal mining museum is a museum that documents the history of the whole mining Montafon, in particular the areas on Kristbergbahn and Knappgruaba Worms (municipality Bartholomäberg ).
