Siliana

Siliana (Arabic سليانة ) is a Tunisian town of about 25,000 inhabitants, about 130 km southwest of the capital Tunis located. Siliana is the capital of the province of the same name. Of the population of the city more than 6,000 people are unemployed.

History

Siliana was created in 1910 as a settlement around a rural weekly market and received on September 6, 1945 the status of a municipality.

The place is famous nationally and outside the country as a center of poverty protests in Tunisia in late November / early December 2012. Demonstrations in place that tried violently suppressed to beat the police, demanded at least 200 injured and were directed against the current governor, the was accused of corruption and poverty and unemployment in the region.
