Sils (Girona)

Sils is a Catalan municipality in the province of Girona, northeastern Spain. It is located in the comarca of Selva.

Església Santa Maria de Sils

Santa Maria de Sils is a parish church from the 12th century. A grave stone right of the church door dates back to the year 1313. The present form of the church as a baroque building with neoclassical elements the church received 1759. The chapel is decorated in the Gothic style. The door with niche dating back to 1802. Documented an altarpiece from 1613 is documented, that no longer exists. The top of the bell tower with green ceramic dome and original wrought-iron structure was designed in 1907 by the modernist architect Rafael Maso from Girona.

Santa Eulalia de església Vallcanera

Santa Eulalia de Vallcanera is a parish church from the 10th century. The consecration of the church in the name of the patron saint Eulalia of Mérida place in the year 969, when the parish was separated from the from Caldes de Malavella. Since 1245 the Church was subordinate to the monastery of Sant Pere Cercada. In the 18th century, the building and the tower was complete. Remains of the Romanesque apse are hidden by the neighboring house ( rectory until 1972 ).

Espai Natural Protegit de l' Estany de Sils

Estany de Sils is a wetland and a nature reserve. It is part of the Pla d' Espais d' interès Natural ( PEIN ) a support plan for protected areas in Catalonia and the European Natura 2000 program. Since the mid-19th century was begun to dry up the swamp to create farmland, and to combat malaria. A core area of the marsh was preserved and became a refuge for many rare species. In 1998, the city Sils and Acciónatura began with a program for the protection and enhancement of the conservation area. Private adjoining land were purchased, dismantled the water areas to year-round waters, the rehabilitated areas and paths and lookout points set up that allows for use of the land without interference from visitors.
