Silvano Bertini

Silvano Bertini ( born March 27, 1940 in Signa, Italy ) is an Italian former welterweight boxer.

Amateur

Bertini in 1962 and 1964 Italian champion in the welterweight division. In 1963 he finished second at the European Championships in Moscow, he was defeated there in the final against Richardas Tamulis from the Soviet Union. In the same year he won the gold medal at the Mediterranean Games in Naples. For his participation in the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964, he won the bronze medal in the welterweight division. After victories over Frederick Desrosiers, Canada (DQ 1 ) Hussein Saddik, Egypt ( 5:0 ), and Michael Varley, UK (KO 2 ), he lost in the semifinals just on points ( 3-2 ) against the eventual Olympic champion Marian Kasprzyk, Poland.

Professional

In 1965 he turned professional and started with a group of 23 victories, including the defeat of Domenico Tiberias, for which he won the Italian championship. The rematch against Tiberias ended in a draw, so that Bertini retained his title. 1969, he was European Champion by a knockout in the thirteenth round against Edwin "Fighting Mack " Arthur of the Netherlands Antilles in January. But in May of the same year he lost the title back to the Frenchman Jean Josselin by technical knockout in the eighth round. In November 1970, he scored a points victory over Eddie Blay. A repeated opportunity for the European Championship Bertini received in November 1971. Yet he lost the fight against Frenchman Roger Menetrey by technical knockout in the thirteenth round.

Bertini now tried his luck in the half- middleweight and was promptly in July 1972 by Italian masters. In August 1973 he wanted to reach the absolute peak of his career: the World Cup after WBA and WBC version. But the Japanese Koichi Wajima defeated him by TKO in the twelfth round and ended his career.
