Silvaplana (Romansh Silvaplauna? / I ) is a municipality in the district of Maloja in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland.
Geography
The well-known holiday resort is located on Lake Silvaplana in the Upper Engadine, at an altitude of 1,815 m at the beginning of the Inn Valley. The lake is the average of the three Upper Engadine lakes, between the St. Moritz Lake and Lake Sils. On the southern side of the Inn of the village part Surlej is (Romanic: for, on the lake '). Not far from this hamlet is located beside a lake, boulder, from the Friedrich Nietzsche said that he thought of the eternal recurrence - is the Thus Spoke Zarathustra based font - have taken in August 1881, when he stopped at this point.
Silvaplana is located right at the intersection of the Inn and the Julier Pass ( 2284 m), which makes it easily accessible from the north. In the southeast of the site with the highest 4050 m peaks of the Eastern Alps rises steeply on the Bernina.

Traffic
The downstream traffic bypasses east since 1965 Silvaplana. Until now, however, all traffic was carried over the Julier Pass through the village. In 2010 started the construction of a bypass road. The opening is scheduled for 2016.
Population
Languages
Originally all spoke inhabitants turkey, a Rhaeto-Romanic dialect. Already in the second half of the 19th century moved to a minority Germans. 1880 gave 73.3 % and 48.61 % in 1910 Romansh as their native language. This value increased to 54.9 % by 1941. But by 1970 had become the minority Romansh language (1970: 200 of 714 inhabitants, equivalent to 28.01 %). Since then breaks the language. Religion
1556 changed the inhabitants of the Protestant faith. In addition to the Reformed village church there since 1962, the Catholic Church Marae Ascension, which belongs to the parish of St. Maurice in St. Moritz.
