Silver nitrite (not to be confused with silver nitrate) is the silver salt of nitrous acid. It is composed of the cation Ag and the nitrite anion NO2.
Production and representation
They can be prepared by reaction of a solution of silver nitrate with potassium nitrite. It falls from a flocculent precipitate of silver nitrite:
Properties
Silver nitrite, AgNO2, is a colorless to yellowish powder or yellow crystalline needles. It is sparingly soluble in cold water, warm water, the solubility is greater, which is why it can be easily recrystallized. Silver nitrite decomposes above 140 ° C with deposition of metallic silver and delivery of nitrous gases. Because of the ease of oxidation by atmospheric oxygen it needs to be stored tightly closed. Under the influence of light enters a gradual decomposition to silver and nitrogen dioxide.
Use
Precipitated and washed silver nitrite may be used by reacting with alkali metal or alkaline earth chlorides to the representation of the corresponding pure alkali metal or alkaline earth metal nitrites, such as:
