Simancas

Simancas is a town in the province of Valladolid in Spain. It lies on the River Pisuerga and was founded by the Romans as Septimanca.

The citadel of Simancas was in the years 934 and 939 ( Battle of Simancas ) scene of fighting between Christians and Moors. It was renewed in 1563 on the orders of Philip II. It is home to the Royal Spanish General Archives, where are stocks for internal and foreign policy of Spain and Europe from the 15th to the 18th century. Especially for the age of the Emperor Charles V and King Philip II of Spain is this pool of fundamental importance. In addition to the archive material exists also an extensive library to Charles V, Philip II and their successors. It is considered one of the major European archives at all.

Stocks to overseas possessions and affairs were outsourced in 1785 with the Archivo General de Indias in Seville.

Culture

Every year on August 1, a play is performed in memory of the historical legend of the tribute to the hundreds of young women in Simancas.
