Simberi Island

Simberi is a volcanic island that belongs to the Tabar Islands in the province of New Ireland in Papua New Guinea. The approximately 40 -square-mile island lies about 900 km north-east of Port Moresby and 25 km north-east of New Ireland, the main island of the province. The island is characterized about 10 km wide and in the east of Bergland. The eroded volcanic cone is about 340 meters high. The coast of the island is mostly steep and surrounded by a Randriff. There are about 1,100 inhabitants, spread over nine clans who are mostly in small villages on the north and west coasts of the island.

In the volcanic highlands on the east side of the island is an open pit mine, be promoted in the gold and silver and bears the name Simberi oxide gold Project. The mine is 100% owned Australian company Allied Gold. The recovery of gold started in February 2008. In July 2009, gave Allied Gold announced that the entire occurrence encompasses 4.7 million ounces of gold, of which 1.4 million ounces of gold oxide and 3.3 million ounces of gold sulfide.
