Simon Hughes

Simon Henry Ward Hughes ( born May 17, 1951 in Cheshire, England) is a British politician and MP for the Liberal Democrats.

Life

Hughes was born in 1951 in Cheshire and grew up in his childhood in Wales. He attended The Cathedral School in Llandaff, the Christ College, Brecon, and then studied at Selwyn College, University of Cambridge, where he graduated in law. In Bruges, he managed the Certificate for Advanced European Studies. 1974 Hughes became a member of the Bar of the Inner Temple, and in 1981 he moved to Bermondsey, a borough of London.

In addition to his work as a lawyer Hughes engaged politically. Hughes was first elected in February 1983 in the House of Commons as MP for Bermondsey. In the following general election Hughes were each re-elected. Within the Liberal Democrats Hughes clothed among others, the Office of the Vice- President of the Liberal Democrat Christian Forum. Hughes was defeated in 2004 as a candidate of the Liberal Democrats in the mayoral elections in London, where he received 15.22 percent of the vote. 2006 Hughes was outed by the British newspaper The Sun as bisexual. In the inner-party struggle for the presidency of the party the Liberal Democrats Hughes was defeated in 2006.

Hughes is a member of the Church of England and currently lives in London.
