Simon P. Norton
Simon Phillips Norton ( born 1952 ) is an English mathematician who deals with group theory.
Norton won in 1967, 1968 and 1969 the gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad in 1976 and a doctorate at Cambridge University (and other simple groups, ie via the Monster group). He is " Life Associate in Residence" at Jesus College, Cambridge.
Norton is known for his work in 1979 with John Horton Conway on " Moonshine " properties of the Monster group ( suspected of John McKay 1978). He is a staff member at the " Atlas of finite groups". He constructed in his dissertation in 1975 the simple finite Harada Norton group, simultaneously with Koichiro Harada (* 1941), which is a subgroup of the group of monsters.
