Simon Pollard Hughes, Jr.

Simon Pollard Hughes, Jr. ( born April 14, 1830 in Carthage, Tennessee, † June 29, 1906 in Little Rock, Arkansas ) was an American politician and 1885-1889 Governor of Arkansas.

Life

Simon Hughes visited the Sylvan Academy and College in Clinton, Tennessee. In December 1849 he came to Arkansas. He was 1853-1855 Sheriff in Monroe County. This was followed by a law degree in 1857 and admitted as a lawyer. Then he settled in Clarendon as a lawyer down. During the American Civil War, he fought in the army of the South. He brought it up to lieutenant colonel. Between 1866 and 1867 was Hughes MP in the House of Representatives from Arkansas. In 1874 he was a delegate at the conference to revise the constitution of Arkansas. From 1874 to 1877 he was Minister of Justice ( Attorney General ) of that State. On September 1, 1884 Hughes was elected as a candidate of the Democratic Party as the new governor of Arkansas.

Policy

Simon Hughes of office began on 17 January 1885. Upon successful re-election in 1886 he was able to remain in the office of governor for four years. During this time the Arkansas Industrial University was reformed. With the position of state geologist, a new office in the government was created. Public executions were abolished and the sale of alcoholic beverages was more difficult. After the end of his term in 1889 Hughes Justice of the Supreme Court of Arkansas in the year. This office he held for 16 years. Simon Hughes died in June 1906 in Little Rock and was buried at the local Mount Holly Cemetery. He was married to Ann E. Blakemore, with whom he had six children.
