Simon van der Stel

Simon van der Stel ( born October 14, 1639June 24, 1712 ) was the first governor of the Cape Colony. He was the son of Adriaan van der Stel, an official of the Dutch East India Company and their commander in Mauritius, and Maria Lievens, who was of Malay descent. He married Johanna Jacoba Six ( 1645-1700 ).

In 1679 he was became commander at the Cape of Good Hope. In the following, he and some other the town of Stellenbosch ( " bush of van der Stel "), which is also named after him. In 1691 he was elected Governor of the Cape of Good Hope. He was relieved of the position in 1699 by his son Willem Adriaan van and retired to his estate, where he died in 1712.
