Simosthenurus was a genus of large, extinct kangaroos. The animals lived in Australia until the late Pleistocene.

Features

The scientific name refers to Simosthenurus kangaroo genus Sthenurus, as its sub- genre, it was first described. Simo - means as much as kurzschnauzig.

The animals had relatively short snouts and extremely strong muscles of mastication. They may have been adapted to tough plants of the arid regions of Australia. The largest species, such as Simosthenurus pales weighed up to 100 kg and were greater than all extant kangaroos.

Types and temporal distribution

Among the species that survived until the late Pleistocene, are browneorum Simosthenurus occidentalis, Simosthenurus. The oldest representative of the genus are known from the early Pliocene.
