Singburi

Province

Singburi ( in Thai สิงห์บุรี, pronunciation: [ sĭŋbùri ː ] ) is the capital of the county is ( Amphoe ) and Singburi Mueang Sing Buri Province in the central region of Thailand.

Etymology

The name comes from Sanskrit सिंह ( Simha, "lion" ) and पुर ( pura, " city ").

Geography

Singburi is located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River amidst the fertile central plain. The distance to the capital Bangkok is about 140 kilometers.

Main agricultural product is rice.

History

The town of Singburi goes back to a settlement of the Dvaravati period and is one of the oldest cities in Thailand.

1895, during the Thesaphiban - administrative reform, the province of Singburi of King Chulalongkorn ( Rama V ) was merged with the neighboring provinces Inburi and Phromburi.

Attractions

  • Wat Na Phrathat ( วัด หน้า พระ ธาตุ, formerly Wat Hua Mueang ) - houses Buddhist temple ( Wat ), the relics of the Buddha and an old Prang from the heyday of the Khmer.
  • Wat Sawang Arom ( วัด สว่างอารมณ์ ) - forms a center of crafts for Buddha statues and exhibits probably the largest collection of traditional shadow play figures.
  • War Memorial - in memory of the great battles of King Ekathat 1765 against the Burmese.
