Siphon (mollusc)

As Sipho (plural: siphons ) or Siphe (Gr. siphon " tube ", " splash ", " lifter " ) is called a tubular organ with different groups of molluscs ( Mollusca ).

  • In the cephalopods ( Cephalopoda ) it is a membranous strand that is surrounded by a calcareous shell ( Siphonalhülle ). It stretches from the living chamber starting backwards through all housing chambers. The siphon can be used after the reaction principle for locomotion.
  • In some snails ( Gastropoda ) is the Sipho an extension of the sheath edge to initiate the respiratory water.
  • The mussels ( Bivalvia ), there are two openings (breathing and Aftersipho ) at the rear edge of the mantle, which are fused together and extended to a tube.
