Sippe

A clan is the ratio of consanguinity within a father legally organized groups, which had a historical significance in Germanic times.

The word ( Old High German sippia, Old Norse sifjar as a plural word, probably etymologically from the goddess Sif ) denotes a kinship belong together grouping of people. The term is relatively inaccurate, or defined differently.

For one, there is a name for a large family (see, among others: Clan ) with common (possibly fictional ) origin and (especially in pre-state societies ) with religious, economic and political function (see family). The clan is thus a fuzzy term for the totality of consanguinity and affinity of a person in the ascending or descending line, including collateral relatives, their spouses and offspring.

In anthropology, the term is closely linked to the Clan.

  • In the German reading he was as a name of both lineages ( lineages ) or Kindreds ( kinship networks) used. Richard Thurnwald subsumed under the term clans that are not politically independent.
  • George P. Murdock changed the term to a clearer separation compared to the " clan " concept. According to Murdock, he used to describe a clear lineage. A distinction is made in so-called Matri - clans and clans Patri, depending on the considered line by a male or female ancestors starting. Then the Patri - clan differs from a patrician clan in that a patrician clan only include the male descendants of an ancestor and for example, a married woman continues to be one of their Matri - clan, even though it is part of the Patri - clans at the same time.

In the nationalist movement and in the time of National Socialism, the use of the clan instead of family had an excessive and political function. Thus, from the family history (genealogy ) the " family research ", from the family register for a village community the "village Clan Book " (see Local heritage book ), and questionable lineages were examined by the " Reichssippenamt ".

In today's vernacular, the word, it is in the upscale vernacular as Deutschtümelei disappears. Is used derogatory derivation clan.
