Sir Frank Bowden, 1st Baronet

Sir Frank Bowden ( born January 30, 1848 in Devon, † April 25, 1921 ), first baronet, of Nottingham, was the founder of the bicycle manufacturer Raleigh.

At the age of 24, he had success in the equities business. When he returned from Hong Kong, he was seriously ill and his doctor predicted that he would have to live an estimated 6 months. On the advice of the doctor towards Bowden began cycling. When he thus was able to recover from his illness, he took over the company in which he had bought his bike. In December 1888, he founded the Raleigh Bicycle Company, which eventually rose in 1896 for the largest bicycle manufacturer in the world. In 1915 the title of Baronet of Nottingham was created for him, which Bowden was raised to the peerage.

He is often associated with the invention of the Bowden cable. In fact, this was in 1896 by Ernest Monnington Bowden invented and produced from 1902 by Frank Bowden.
