Sir Robert Pigot, 2nd Baronet

Sir Robert Pigot, Bart (* 1720 in Stafford, Staffordshire, England; † August 1, 1796 ) was a British officer in the American Revolutionary War.

Robert Pigot was 1758 Major in the 10th Infantry Regiment. In 1764 he was lieutenant colonel. From 1769 to 1775 he commanded the South Staffordshire Infantry Regiment. On June 17, 1775 Robert Pigot commanded the left flank of the British attack at the Battle of Bunker Hill. On July 9, he was a colonel in the 55th ( Westmoreland ) Infantry Regiment. He was appointed on 12 November 1775 as recognition of his bravery in the battle of Bunker Hill to colonel of the 38th (1st Staffordshire) Infantry Regiment. In 1777 he was promoted to Major General. 1778 Pigot was commander of Rhode Iceland and promoted to lieutenant general. In the battle of Newport on August 29, 1778, he faced 3,000 man American troops of 5,000 men under General John Sullivan. In 1783 he received the title of Sir Robert, Bart. On 8 February 1796, he resigned his commission and died on 1 August of the same year.

Two of his brothers were also famous personalities: Sir George Pigot, Baron ( born March 4, 1719 † May 9, 1777 ) was Governor of Madras in India and Hugh Pigot (* 1721, † 1792) was admiral and commander in chief of the West Indies.
