Sirmium (Greek Σίρμιον Sirmion ) in ancient times was the capital of the Roman province of Pannonia. The historic landscape Syrmia between Save and Danuvius (Donau) was named after this ancient city. The archaeological site is located within the present city of Sremska Mitrovica, which is part of the Serbian Vojvodina.

Sirmium was one of the most important cities in the Balkans, mainly because of its military function. The Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius moved here during the Marcomanni wars of his headquarters. In late antiquity, Sirmium was also an imperial residence. Here also the synods of Sirmium ( 357-359 ) took place. Even today there are some ruins from Roman times. After the Romans, there were several gentlemen: From 504, the Ostrogoths ruled the strategically important city. After the end of the Gothic dominion Sirmium was under control of the Gepids and was its capital. After smashing the Gepid in 567 by the Lombards Sirmium fell to the Eastern Roman Empire, thus on the eve of Langobardeneinfalls in Italy which reached its greatest extent. 582 it fell to the Avars. 870 Sirmium by Pope Hadrian II to the seat of the Archbishop of Pannonia and Great Moravia was made. However, the actual bishop's seat was Mosapurc in Balaton Principality, as Sirmium at that time belonged to the Great Bulgarian Empire. 1020 the Byzantines conquered back the city that remained Byzantine with some interruptions to the late 12th century. Then Sirmium between Hungarians and Serbs was fought, during the reign of the Turks, the city lost importance.
