Sirod

Sirod is a commune in the French department of Jura in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Sirod is on 620 m above sea level. M., about six kilometers east of the city Champagnole (air line). The village is located in the Jura, in the wide valley basin of the Val de Sirod Ain at the top, below the Rochers des Commères.

History

The territory of Sirod was already inhabited during the Gallo- Roman period. In the year 522 King Sigismund of Burgundy gave the territory to the monastery of Saint- Maurice in the canton of Valais. In the 9th century, founded the Abbey of Saint - Oyend -de -Joux (now Saint -Claude ), which here had land in Sirod a priory, whose church was later elevated to the parish church in the region. Together with the Franche -Comté Sirod came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France.
