Sisu

Sisu [ sisu ] is a Finnish term that refers to a supposedly only the Finns own mental property. The word is considered to be untranslatable, but can with " power ", " endurance " or " perseverance " and " intransigence " or " fighting spirit " are vividly reproduced in seemingly hopeless situations. As a cultural concept Sisu is an identity for Finland to a high degree.

Etymologically, sisu is with the tribe Sisä ( "inner " ) related. When Bible translators Mikael Agricola, the first Finnish-language literary presses sisu the inmost of man, so his character. Originally the word had a negative connotation, as in Finnish Dictionary ( Suomen Sana Kirja, 1826) of the linguist Gustaf Renvall is clear: Renvall translated sisu with " content ," but also called the connotation of 'mind property, esp bad, malice, hatred ". Later, the word meaning to " mercilessness, ruthlessness " developed to " courage, boldness ," and finally " toughness, endurance ".

Beginning of the 20th century, they began to understand Sisu as specifically Finnish mental property, the concept evolved into a national myth. The meaning of the term for the Finnish self-understanding is the oft-quoted triad " Sisu, sauna, Sibelius " clearly. In particular, the term Sisu is often related to Finnish history, particularly in the Winter War, but also in sports, especially in hockey internationals endeavor. As a national concept Sisu is comparable with the Romanian Dor or the Portuguese saudade.

Because of its cultural significance, the word is often used Sisu often naming. So there is a manufacturer of heavy trucks, a tank manufactured by the defense company Patria, a Pastillenmarke and an icebreaker called Sisu.
