Situation, Task, Action, Result

The STAR method is a native of the United States formal survey techniques for job interviews in order to obtain comprehensive information on the capabilities and behavior of a candidate in a particular situational context. The acronym STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action and Result may be translated as situation, task, action and result.

The survey technique consists of the following four points:

  • Situation: A concrete description of the situation with their environment, which is the starting point.
  • Task (task): What is the goal you want to achieve in the situation or which task should be solved?
  • Action (Action): What actions you have set to achieve the goal? What alternatives have you considered? Why you have chosen a particular action?
  • Result ( Result): What was the actual result of your actions? Did you achieve the goal? What have you learned from the situation?
