Sivaganga district

The district Sivaganga (Tamil: சிவகங்கை மாவட்டம் ) is a district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Administrative center is the eponymous town of Sivaganga.

Geography

The district lies in the southern inland Sivaganga Tamil Nadu. Neighboring districts are in the north Tiruchirappalli, Pudukkottai in the northeast, Ramanathapuram in the south east, Virudhunagar and Madurai in the south west to the west. The area of ​​the district is 4,140 square kilometers.

The area of the district is part of the flat coastal plain of Tamil Nadu and is crossed by the rivers Manimuttar and Vaigai. Around the city Karaikkudi in the northeast of the district is the Chettinad region, home of the Chettiar caste dealer. Chettinad is known for its meaty and spicy cuisine and maintained by the Chettiar special architectural tradition.

The district Sivaganga is divided into six taluks Tirupathur, Karaikkudi, Devakottai, Sivaganga, Manamadurai and Ilayangudi.

History

Originally, the area belonged to the district of Sivaganga Bailiwick of Setupatis (local title of prince ) of Ramanathapuram. 1730 succeeded a vassal of Setupatis called Sasivarnan due to succession disputes among the rulers of Ramanathapuram to snap two-fifths of the territory itself and to become self-employed as Raja of Sivaganga. His son and successor was in 1773 in the fight against the British, who then made ​​Sivaganga become a part of British India. Beginning of the 19th century continued the British one, the heirs of the ruler as zamindars ( landlords ).

During the colonial period, the area of Sivaganga district first to Madurai then was, from 1910 to the newly formed district Ramanathapuram province of Madras. After Indian independence, the area came in 1956 to the newly formed State of Madras (now Tamil Nadu ). 1985, split the district of Sivaganga from this as a separate district.

Population

According to the Indian census of 2011, the district Sivaganga has 1,341,250 inhabitants. Compared to the last census in 2001 the population had grown by 16.1 percent. The growth rate thus corresponds to the average of Tamil Nadu ( 15.5 per cent). The district is sparsely populated: the population density is 324 inhabitants per square kilometer, well below the median of the State ( 555 inhabitants per square kilometer) and is one of the lowest of all the districts of Tamil Nadu. Also, the degree of urbanization is 31.0 percent lower than the average of Tamil Nadu ( 48.5 per cent). The literacy ratio, which was 80.5 percent of the mean value of the state ( 80.3 percent).

The population of the district of Sivaganga represent the Hindus according to the 2001 census, 88.9 percent of the vast majority. There are also minorities of Christians ( 5.9 percent ) and Muslims (5.2 per cent).
