Sixth United States Army

The U.S. 6th Army (English: Sixth United States Army ) is an army of the United States Army who is currently serving as a Land Component Command of the United States Southern Command (United States Army South, short USARSO ). During World War II it was used in the Pacific theater.

History

The army was set up in January 1943 under the command of Lieutenant General Walter Krueger, she wore from April, the code name Alamo Force. It was first used during Operation Cartwheel to isolate the Japanese base of Rabaul on New Britain. After the completion of the operation led them through on the north coast of New Guinea, together with the Australian Army operations.

In September 1944, it was replaced in New Guinea by the 8th U.S. Army and became operational in October, and battle at the landing at Leyte in part. In December it was replaced again by the 8th Army and was preparing for the landing on Luzon before. On January 9, 1945, they landed in the Gulf of Lingayen and secured after meeting with the 8th Army in the northern part of Luzon Manila. The 6th Army was not in the surgery performed Downfall provided for landing on Kyushu.

After they had participated in the occupation of Japan for a short time, the 6th Army was transferred back to the United States and took its new headquarters in the Presidio of San Francisco.
