SJ U

The U Series is an electric locomotive for shunting, which from 1930 as a regular production locomotive, building was built on the findings of the series Ua for the Swedish State Railways Statens Järnvägar and TGOJ. Some of these locomotives has been modernized over the years, more machines were directly from the manufacturer ASEA at LKAB as Series F and Series NSB El 10 sold.

History

In connection with the construction of haul locomotives of Class D SJ began in the 1920s to test electrical shunting. There were three locomotives ordered in 1925 with the series designation U at ASEA. The designation of these three locomotives was later changed to Ua.

Ua production run

These locomotives had the same kind of power transmission as the later locomotives of the U- series. The electric motor drove a jackshaft and thence through side rods all three axes. Among other things, the production run had the cab at one end of the locomotive. The electric motor was the type ASEA KJ 136, the pantograph type MK -II. The as supplied gray painted locomotives were mainly in ore port Svartö at the Malmbanan in use. Only in the 1930s, in the then usual then red-brown color were painted. The three locomotives were stored between 1965 and 1970 and scrapped until 1971 in Notviken.

More construction series

The cab was Ua Due to the poor visibility for the train driver in the production run to improve in the following model series moved to the Lokmitte. So they got the characteristic appearance in the style of the later series H. The Stems fell to both sides easily. The pantograph was placed on the slightly domed cab roof. Like all locomotives and cars of this period was painted in reddish brown, the SJ version. The TGOJ locomotives were originally delivered in dark green with yellow decor, later they got a brown orange paint with white stripes on the front and back and a white stripe along the cab. The new model series have been continuously improved. Towards the end of their service life existed locomotives in several color options: red-orange with dark gray top and blue with red diagonal stripes.

Apart from the optically differently designed three locomotives of the pre-series (Ua), there were five different models of the Series U. The performance figures are correct to the front of the secondment:

Production series Ub

From the series Ub most copies were manufactured 1930-1951 with 123 pieces. Of these, 90 of the SJ, 14 at LKAB, 5 to TGOJ and 13 at NSB. In SJ locomotives drove up to the 1990s.

Over the years, the stems were changed several times. So these were first -edged V- shape at the front side, then followed a smooth front side and finally the hoods were we rounded in the series Ud and the H series. As the D series also received locomotives later more powerful engines with 610 kW, but had no change in the model series designation or serial number result.

Production run Uc

From the UC only one copy was built. This was a Akkumulatorwagen ( LoB 10,55 m, weight 32.8 tons, price 234,000 crowns ) are coupled and had the battery an output of 215 kW. The car was scrapped in 1956 and the locomotive drove as normal electric locomotive. 1974 was the locomotive a new engine type KJ 136 with an output of 515 kW. From 1972 to 1987, she was stationed in Kristinehamn. 1979 again a new engine with a power of 700 kW was installed. The release of the locomotive in 1991, the same year she was scrapped in Gothenburg.

Production series Ud

In conjunction with the large Lokbestellungen the late 1940s, a modernized version of Ub was commissioned. In this case, an additional dummy shaft was installed in order to achieve a better balance of the coupling rods and improve the handling characteristics, to increase the maximum speed of 45 km / h to 60 km / h. Additionally, the use of roller bearings instead of sleeve bearings was. The cab cabins were better insulated, similar to the series from the D improved in Da locomotives. This was visible from the outside of the rubber strips that replaced the wooden slats.

Ud 864, 865, 866, 868 and 870 were prepared in the early 1970s for the installation of an automatic clutch and extended to the new length over buffers 10,700 mm. Ud 864 and 868 were equipped with automatic coupler type SA3 to shunting of ore cars. In 1975, the production series was equipped with multiple control.

The engine power of the type KJ 137, with which the locomotives were delivered, was 620 kW, most of the engines were later fitted with engines of the type KJC 137 with 720 kW. The original color of the locomotives was brown. Ud 865 was repainted in the late 1980's in red.

Ud 848-853, 855-861, 867, 870 and 871 were modernized during the 1990's and got the new Bauserienbezeichnng Uf, where Uf 870 again received the original length.

Ud 863-865 and 868 were 1996 Malmtrafik AB - delivered MTAB. While the first three locomotives were retired and scrapped from 2001 to 2003, was 868 in 1999 to Norrbotten Järnvägsmuseum.

Are still present (2012 ): Ud 854 at the Swedish Railway Museum Gavle, Ud 868 in Norrbotten Järnvägsmuseum in Luleå and spare parts source Ud 872 Euromaint in Notviken.

The production run Ue were converted Ub locomotives (Ub 167, 169, 170, 246, 247, 249, 251, 252, 254, 256, 260, 263, 264, 276-281, 285, 287, 288, 290, 497, 499, 500, 528-586, 588-590, 592, 593, 645, 646, 648, 649, 652, 653, 688, 690-692, 703, 705, 708-711, 714-717 ). These were equipped with the 1988-1990 purchased by TGOJ Ub 501-501 and 505 between 1987 and 1990 in the main workshop Notviken with a new engine type ASEA KJC 137. In addition, they received radio remote control, multiple control and central lubrication. In addition, the original brown locomotives were repainted gray / blue / yellow colors. Early 1990s, the color was changed again in rot-orange/dunkelblau.

The acquired from TGOJ locomotives were given the serial numbers 995 to 998 Ue Ue 252, 287, 290 and 652 were 1996 Malmtrafik AB ( MTAB ) sold, were there but only briefly in use. Of the entire series no machine is in use.

Production run Uf

The production run Uf were rebuilt locomotives Ud (Ud 848-853, 855-861, 867, 870, 871 ). They were equipped with multiple control and radio remote control. U 861 and 871 were sold in 1996 to Malmtrafik AB ( MTAB ), were there but only briefly in use.

2011 was only one engine, the U 860 in operation. It belonged to ISS Facility Services / Trafficare for shunting in the passenger station of Hagalund, Solna. The locomotive was parked long and was taken in 2010 due to lack of locomotives back into operation. Above all, she was used to move IC trains from Veolia. Euromaint in 2010 Uf 848, 849 and 851 taken from SJ, but all are parked in Notviken and were replaced by diesel locomotives of the type V4 and Z66.
