Sjón

Sjón, with full name Sigurjón Birgir Sigurðsson ( born August 27, 1962 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic author and artist.

He was known for his lyrics for Björk, especially for Lars von Trier film Dancer in the Dark.

Life and work

He grew up in a suburb of Reykjavik, where he found the poetry claims to have the lyrics to David Bowie and the Icelandic sagas. His first book of poems he published at the age of 15 years. From 1980 to 1986 he was a member of the surrealist, performance - oriented poets group " Medúsa " to. During this time he published several volumes of poetry before 1987, his first novel was published Stálnótt.

As a musician Sjón occurred ( a play on words with the translation of his first name Sigurjón ), among others, with the Sugarcubes in the hit " Luftgitar " in appearance as "Johnny Triumph".

1989/90 he lived in the Netherlands and the mid-nineties in London, where he worked primarily with Björk. Meanwhile, he has returned to Reykjavík.

At the Academy Awards in 2001 Sjón was nominated along with Björk and Lars von Trier for an Oscar for Best Song. However, the song " I've Seen It All" from the film Dancer in the Dark could not prevail against " Things Have Changed " from Wonder Boys by Bob Dylan himself.

He was honored for Skugga - Baldur 's Literature Prize of the Nordic Council in 2005.

On 27 May 2006 he joined " Weltklang - Night of Poetry " during the poetry festival berlin on. 2006 appeared in New Directions Publishing with " singing of the stones collector " ( Isl " söngur steinasafnarans " ) for the first time one of his books of poetry in German. In the anthology " text Iceland " several texts of Sjón were taken.

2007 was Sjón owner of the Samuel Fischer Guest Professorship for Literature at the Peter Szondi Institute for General and Comparative Literature at the Free University of Berlin.

In November 2008, his new novel " Rökkurbýsnir " appeared.
