Skagen is the northernmost city in Denmark. The port city is located at the northern tip of Jutland and is surrounded by long sandy beaches. Its port, Skagen Havn, is considered the largest fishing port in Denmark. The city in the territory of Frederikshavn municipality counts 8220 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013) and is 143 km ². The area around Skagen is picturesque and is with red tile roofs that reach to the beaches, determined by many flat, yellow houses. From Frederikshavn from the private railway Skagensbanen moves to the seaside resort.

Typical for the region are those of " Skabow " ( born or traditional in Skagen inhabitants according Gundolf Fuchs) lived in older houses which have often to be seen white skirting end brick.

Into the sea outstanding landscape gave the place its name, which derives from the Old Norse word Skaga and about " sticking out " (Danish rage Frem ) means.

Geography

North of Skagen is the flat expiring headland Grenen where Kattegat and Skagerrak flow together clearly visible.

Earlier, the area was south of Skagen almost entirely of sand dunes. To build a solid road link to Skagen, many dunes have been planted. Today located south of Skagen, the two largest shifting sand dunes in Denmark. The largest, with an area of about 1 sq. km the Råbjerg Mile, the other large shifting is Sandmilen.

History

From 1250 there are traces which suggest north of the hill Fyrbakken on a first settlement. Skagen was first mentioned in 1299; 1413 the marketing rights were given to the fishing village. 1672 was one of the city - despite wars, decline of fisheries, storm surges and siltation by shifting sand dunes - already just over 1000 inhabitants.

Over the centuries, several lighthouses were constructed to guide shipping due to numerous strandings 1560 the first Wippfeuer, 1746 Det Hvide Fyr, 1848 Skagen Fyr or Det Grå Fyr and 1956 Skagen Vest. In the 1870s, the era of the Skagen painters, to which the special mood lighting Skagen exercised a special fascination began. 1890 was the Skagensbanen, a narrow-gauge train to Frederikshavn opened. In 1907 the opening of the new port, Skagen Havn.

Politics and Administration

Since 1 January 2007, part of Skagen, which formed previously own municipality includes the villages of Skagen, Bunken, Hulsig Højen, Kandestederne Skiveren, Tuen and Ålbæk, to Frederikshavn municipality. The municipality belongs to Region Nordjylland.

Attractions

In the Skagen Museum are about 1100 naturalistic, realistic and impressionistic works of a former artists' colony of the 19th century, the Skagenmalern issued. Skagen also has a Natural History Museum and a Museum of Amber.

The church buried ( Tilsandede Kirke ) St. Laurentii is located 3 kilometers southwest of Skagen in the dunes east of the main road. The church dates from the 13th century, but had to be abandoned due to sand erosion.

The nature center Skagen Odde Nature Center since May 2000 provides information on the topics of sand, water, wind and light to the understanding of natural phenomena, which are particularly impressive at the confluence of the North and Baltic Sea.

Not far from the headland Grenen the grave by the Danish poet Holger Drach man lies in the dunes.

Beacon

Skagen has several Nachtseezeichen. Most striking is the lighthouse, which is the second highest in Denmark with 46 m and is electrically operated.

The inhabitants of Skagen call it the Grey Tower. A little further south is closer to the place once a lighthouse (white tower), stands out from the brick brick water tower by its white color. Nearby is a replica of an original 1560 built fire support, which resembles an old draw-well. A loaded with burning wood iron basket could be in this Wippfeuer pulled a large lever, and was thus visible from afar.

All these three beacons are located on the Baltic side of Skagen. To warn the sailors of the North Sea off Grenen, in Højen ( Gammel Skagen ) was also erected a beacon, which consists of a pyramid-shaped wooden frame. 1956 also created along the west coast of the beacon Skagen West as conspicuous narrow concrete tower.
