Skaneateles Lake

The Skaneateles Lake is a lake in the Finger Lakes in upstate New York. The name " Skaneateles " means " long lake " in one of the local Iroquoian languages.

The lake was created as a moraine at the end of the last ice age.

Skaneateles Lake has an area of ​​26 km ², a length of 26 km and a maximum width of 2.4 km. The lake lies at an altitude of 263 m.

The Skaneateles is considered as the cleanest lake in the Finger Lakes. It serves as a drinking water reservoir for Syracuse and other cities. For this reason, special attention is given to the water quality in the lake and its catchment area.

The shores of Skaneateles Lake belong to the following counties: Onondaga County, Cayuga County and Cortland County. The village of Skaneateles, with a population of about 2,500 located on the northern end of the lake. Since 1881 there are summer cottages on the lake. Meanwhile, their number is about 2000.

The lake is a popular sailing waters. Since 1847 there are boat races on the Skaneateles Lake.
