Skarszewy

Skarszewy [ skar'ʃɛvɨ ] ( German Schoeneck in West Prussia ) is a town of about 7,000 inhabitants in Poland. It is located 40 kilometers south of Gdansk, is the powiat Starogardzki, Pomeranian Voivodeship to.

History

The first notes about today's Skarszewy date back to 1198, when the Knights had their seat here. The city rights were granted in 1320. Remains of a castle and a city wall from the period still exist. 1370 sold the St. John the city to the Teutonic Order. The Second Peace of Thorn of 1466 Schoeneck came from the German Teutonic Order Prussia Royal Prussia (West Prussia). Because since 1613 the Starosta of the place was voivode of Pomeranian Province at the same time, the Castle of Schoeneck was also the seat of the province where the district met and the archive was kept. Since 1772 the city was the Kingdom of Prussia and duly 1818-1920 Schoeneck was in West Prussia part of the district Berent. As a result of the Versailles Treaty Schoeneck was then part of the Polish Corridor. In 1939 it was occupied by the German army, and came to the end of the Second World War by conquest of the Soviet Union under Administration of Poland.

In Skarszewy there are two Catholic churches, a large Baptist church with its own cemetery, several kindergartens, primary schools and some secondary schools. There is a church choir and a music school. Also a sports club, the city has. In the fire department 350 members are active, including women.
