Skinnskatteberg

Skinnskatteberg is a place ( tätort ) in the Swedish province of Västmanland County and the historic province of Västmanland. He is the chief town of Skinnskatteberg.

The village is located about 55 km north- west of Västerås and is an old center for the processing of iron and other mining products. As a mining region Skinnskatteberg was first mentioned in the mid-14th century. After the large-scale closure of the ironworks at the beginning of the 20th century, the wood processing was the main industry. After these factories of rationalization was in most respects to the victims, is a company now manufactures ventilation systems, the largest employer.

History

The place name Skynzekkeberge first appeared in the mid-14th century. The original meaning of the term is disputed. It has been suggested that he was referring to a mountain near the church, a leather bag ( skinnsäck ) possible. Other people interpreted the word as "the mining region, paid their taxes ( skatt ) in leather ( skinn ) ." In quick succession came huts and forges in the vicinity of the place. 1582 was a state blast furnace, which was completed in 1609 with a hammer mill. 1611 was still a copper smelter, but already in the 1620s, these facilities were shut down.

In the 1730s, acquired by Count Fredrik GYLLENBORG ( 1698-1759 ), who already had other cabins in the area, many workshops in Skinnskatteberg. Under his leadership, the mining was also promoted. About the chemist William of Hisinger the plants eventually came into the possession of the noble family Heijkenskjöld.
