SkyWest Airlines, Inc. is an American regional airline headquartered in St. George.

History

In 1972, Ralph Atkin started after buying the Dixie Airlines with a Piper PA -34 Seneca SkyWest Airlines. The first flight went from St. George, with a stop in Cedar City to Salt Lake City. The beginning was difficult and by 1975 the company had accumulated a loss of U.S. $ 300,000. It was then reorganized the administration, the staff and the number of aircraft reduced.

Until 1979, SkyWest had recovered financially so that three 19 -seat Fairchild Metro II could be procured. In the same year a new administration building and a new maintenance center were built in St. George.

1984 SkyWest bought in Palm Springs (California ) based Sun Air, the Metro II fleet grew to 26 machines in Palm Springs and a new maintenance center was opened.

In 1985 the headquarters was moved from the airport to the center of St. George. In the same year a code-sharing agreement has been concluded with Western Airlines and has since flown shuttle flights to its hub in Salt Lake City.

In 1986 the airline SkyWest Inc. as to the stock market. Western Airlines was acquired by Delta Airlines and also the agreement of the airline.

In 1987, Delta Airlines 20% of SkyWest shares. In the same year SkyWest took over the Color Canyon Air Service and changed the name to Cedar City Air Service. From Palm Springs, the first Embraer EMB 120 Brasilia was used and the fleet increased to 41 machines.

1991 SkyWest served 42 cities in eight U.S. states with a fleet of 15 of Brasilia and 35 metros. 1994 SkyWest received her first Bombardier CRJ and was the first airline in the CRJ began. It was followed by the acquisition of Scenic Airlines.
