Slade Gorton

Thomas Slade Gorton III ( born January 8, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois ) is an American politician ( Republican), who represented the State of Washington in the U.S. Senate.

Early life

Slade Gorton - he is usually called without his first name Thomas - was born the son of Thomas and Ruth Slade Gorton Israel in Chicago and grew up in Evanston, where he attended the compulsory school. Shortly before the end of World War II also Gorton was drafted in 1945 and served until 1946 as a soldier in the U.S. Army.

He then continued his education at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, where he graduated in 1950. In 1953, Gorton received his law degree at Columbia University in New York and began to practice as a lawyer then in Seattle.

From 1953 to 1956 Gorton served in the rank of Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and was even then ready for use until 1980 as a reservist.

Political career

1959 Gorton was elected to the House of Representatives from Washington, where he served as Majority leader of the Republicans from 1967 to 1969. 1969 Gorton was appointed Attorney General of Washington, a position he held for twelve years.

In 1980, Gorton successfully ran for a seat in the U.S. Senate, where he remained from January 3, 1981 to January 3, 1987. It was the Democrat Brockman Adams, Gorton defeated by the Senate seat in the election. However, he noted in 1988 for re-election and won a seat in the Senate again. In 1994, Gorton was re-elected and served as of 3 January 1989 to 3 January 2001.

Late life

In 2002, Gorton was a member of the Commission of Inquiry on the attacks of September 11, which submitted its final report in 2004. In 2005, Gorton took over the presidency of the right-of- motion Constitutional Law PAC, which campaigns for Republican candidates in the use of public office, but especially at the Federal Court of Washington.

Private life

Gorton is married to Sally Jean Clark since 28 June 1958. The couple has three children, son 's death and the daughters Sara Jane and Rebecca Lynn.
