Slættaratindur

The peak in winter

The Slættaratindur (literally "flat top " ) is at 880 meters the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands.

The Slættaratindur is located in the northernmost part of the second largest island Eysturoy on the road between Eiði in the West, Gjógv in the Northeast and Funningur in the east. As the Faroese name Slættaratindur suggests, it has a flat top. Like all mountains of the Faroe Islands he is free of snow in summer. The increase is steep but technically easy. Here there are organized hikes, from the highest point of the pass starting. The tour takes about four hours.

From the summit you can overlook the entire Faroe Islands in fine weather. If the air is extremely clear and dry, you can see the Guinness Book of World Records in 2006, according to the northwest even 550 km away Vatnajökull on Iceland. This would thus be the longest sight on earth, but what is sometimes doubted.

Directly opposite to the northeast of the Gráfelli rises, with 856 meters the second highest peak in the archipelago. Altogether there are ten in the Faroes mountains that rise more than 800 meters from the sea.
