Sleeper dike

A sleeping dike is an embankment that is on the landward side ( single side ) of an existing newer dike. Since it is in most cases on the domestic country, he is also sometimes referred to as an inland dyke.

The construction of a dyke is not necessarily made on the route of the existing old dike. If the route of the old dike is located on the land side of the new dike, the " Altdeich " often receive. He then forms a second ( "sleeping " ) dike line, which provides an additional safety in extreme floods, sleep dike.

Often, this happens when a new polder created through land reclamation. The outer limit of the Koog is the new dike, the older dyke is now between two pieces of land.
