Slick Jones

Wilmore "Slick" Jones ( born April 13, 1907 in Roanoke ( Virginia), † November 2, 1969 in New York City ) was an American jazz musician (drums, vibraphone).

Life and work

Jones first played in 1934 and 1936, briefly at Fletcher Henderson. Nationally, he was known by his membership in Fats Waller's Rhythm ( 1936-41 ), with whom he went on numerous tours; Furthermore, he participated in recordings of Don Redman, Lionel Hampton and Una Mae Carlisle. After leaving Waller's band in 1941, he worked with Stuff Smith, Eddie South, Claude Hopkins, and Hazel Scott. In the postwar years he played with Don Byas and Gene Sedric (1946-1954), Sidney Bechet, Sidney De Paris (1954-1955), in his later years with Doc Cheatham, Eddie Durham and the end of 1964 with Eddie Barefield. Slick Jones worked during his career from 1936 to 1966 at 75 recording sessions.
