Slidell [ slaɪdɛl ] is a city in the eastern U.S. state of Louisiana on Lake Pontchartrain in St. Tammany Parish. The small town is part of the agglomeration of New Orleans.

History

The city of Slidell was founded in 1882 /83 the construction of the New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad from New Orleans to Meridian (Mississippi). It was named after the politician John Slidell. In the 1910s next to a creosote factory, a wood mill and shipyard were built. 1915 burned down the creosote factory, where 58 people lost their lives. Later the factory on the Bayou Lake was rebuilt. Thus, the lake was polluted, although he served the drinking water supply of Slidell. Since in the vicinity of the place were many facilities of NASA, the population since the 1960s grew rapidly. In 1986 the factory was abandoned and a Superfund site. The renovation consisted of the excavation of the site and the subsequent burning of the waste and lasted until 1996. On the site of a park was created. On 29 August 2005, the city by Hurricane Katrina was badly damaged.

The Crescent connects Slidell with Atlanta, Baltimore, Birmingham, Charlotte, New York City, New Orleans, Philadelphia and Washington DC.
