Slieve Donard

The Mountains of Mourne, the Slieve Donard in the center

The Slieve Donard ( Irish: Sliabh Dónairt < Sliabh Domhanghairt ) is 849 m, the highest mountain in Northern Ireland. It is located in County Down on the East Coast near the town of Newcastle. The mountain is the most easterly of the Mourne Mountains, its summit is just three kilometers away from the coast. From the summit, 50 km away city of Belfast is evident.

The hike up to the summit can be described as easy, even though the path is eroded in some places. Worth seeing is the Mourne Wall, a 35 -km-long dry stone wall, which was built around the mountain range to encompass the headwaters. On the Slieve Donard, the wall runs along the western and northern shoulder.

Named the mountain to the Holy Domangart (also referred to as St. Donard ), a companion of St. Patrick of Ireland and patron saint of the village of Maghera. According to tradition, he built at the foot of the mountain a church and a chapel at the summit. He is said to have died in the year 507.
