Slieve League

The cliffs of Slieve League ( Irish: Sliabh Liag; translated: stone mountains ) in the west of the Irish county of Donegal on the Atlantic Ocean are one of the main attractions of this region. The steeply sloping into the sea cliffs are 601 meters above sea level with its to the highest cliffs in Europe. They are often referred to in guidebooks erroneously as the highest sea cliffs in Europe, but the cliffs on Achill Iceland and cliff formations in Scandinavia are higher.

On top of the cliff are protected by a semicircular stone wall, a ruined beehive hut and the ruins of a chapel. Here is the hermitage of Saint Aed. Off the Wall is located under a pile of stones around a stone cross, a holy well, a little further east another.

You can visit the cliffs in several ways:

  • By car you drive from Teelin, a small town north of the cliffs, over an 8 km long continuous two-lane road

At Carrigan Head with first parking lot and a sheep barrier to 300 m high Bunglass Point with further parking, from where one has a view over the entire cliffs. From here you get to walk to One Man's Pass with the possibility of descending to switch to the Pilgrim 's Pass.

  • The already -posted from Teelin One Man's Pass is part of a footpath along the ridge of the cliffs on to the northern Malin Beg This at some points very narrow way is dangerous dizzy, or in strong winds and gusts.
  • On foot you can choose from Teelin from the Pilgrim 's Pass ( also known as Old Man's Pass) that leads behind the cliffs to the chapel on the summit. The last pilgrimage here is said to have taken place in 1909.
  • In summer, boat tours can be booked at the foot of the cliffs from Killybegs and Teelin.
