Slipcasting

The slip is a special plaster mold casting process for casting of green bodies, blanks or castings that are suitable for fire ceramic products. The slip is used for example in the traditional porcelain production for use.

Casting process

The slurry, a mineral - water mixture defined viscosity is introduced in carefully dried before plaster molds. The gypsum slurry quickly cut off the water shares, which are deposited the mineral constituents of the plaster mold, compress and increasingly solidify. After completion of a given state, the plastic strength divisible plaster molds are carefully removed. The slip casting is mainly used in the porcelain industry for use.

Plaster molds

Plaster molds are generally produced in so-called foundries for a female piece. They are seedless and can consist of multiple components with different pitch levels. Mostly, however, are for symmetrical pieces, such as vases, two-part forms used at a pitch level. The longer the slurry ( and mass ) remains in the mold, the thicker the deposit layer. As soon as the intended thickness has been reached, the excess slip is poured from the mold. The plaster molds are dried and used for further casting cycles. Upon reaching the maximum permissible wear tolerance, the plaster mold in question is replaced.

Further processing

The still-wet green body can optionally be retouched or refinished. In the manufacture of porcelain bisque firing it, follow the steps, applying the glaze, gloss firing and decoration firing. Many mass-produced items are prepared via slip casting. Particularly fragile items, such as fingers, straps or cup handle can be glued with pasty mass of material.

Method for the ceramic molding

The methods of ceramic forming mainly differ (characterized by the addition of water shares ) of the porcelain used or the slip by the viscosity. In the manufacture of porcelain, a distinction the following basic types of design:

  • Presses ( 0-15 % water content)
  • Plastic molding ( 15-25 % water content)
  • Casting (> 25 % water content), also slip (slip)
  • Ceramics
  • Porcelain
