Slough

Slough [ slaʊ ] is a city and unitary authority in the county of Berkshire in the south of England.

History

The majority of the city was originally part of Buckinghamshire and developed over years from the merger of villages along the A4 road between London, Bath and Bristol. The first written mention of the city (as Slo ) in 1196th The name is probably due from the English word for swamp ( slough ) and possibly also of sloe ( blackthorn ).

The astronomer William Herschel and his sister Caroline created the first map of the universe with a telescope that Herschel had built in his garden in the Windsor Road in Slough. A monument commemorates today it. William Herschel married in St Laurence 's Church in Slough, where he is buried.
