Sloviansk

Slowjansk (Ukrainian Слов'янськ; Russian Славянск / Slavjansk ) is a city in the Donetsk Oblast in eastern Ukraine. Slowjansk is the center of Rajons same and has about 118,000 inhabitants ( 2013).

Geography

Slowjansk is in the Donets Basin at the confluence of the Kasennyj Torez with the Suchyj Torez 93 km north of Oblasthauptstadt Donetsk. Together with the towns Mykolajiwka ( Миколаївка ) and Swjatohirsk ( Святогірськ; Slowjanohirsk to 2003 ) it forms a City Council community.

History

In the county of Slowjansk is the first time in 1526 writing mentioned monastery Swjatohirsk. In place of the town, the fortress gate was established in 1676. Even then, the salt was in the surrounding area of the city won and driven intensive salt trade. In 1784 the city was renamed Slowjansk, probably a conversion from Solewansk = " salt city ". Today the city is one of the largest suppliers of salt in Eastern Europe. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the town became the center of the chemical industry. From October 25th 1941 to September 6th 1943, the city of troops of the Wehrmacht was occupied. Since 1974 Slowjansk has the status of an independent city.

Rajon

Slowjansk is the administrative seat of the homonymous Rajons, but is not itself a part of him. The Rajon Slowjansk (Ukrainian Слов'янський район ) has scarce 40,000 inhabitants in an area of 1,274 km ². The population density is 31 inhabitants per km ².
