Whereabouts
On April 27, 1916 UC 5 ran at Shipwash Shoal on a sandbar at low tide and sat tight ( 51 ° 58 ' N, 1 ° 38' O51.9666666666671.6333333333333 ). The crew destroyed the on-board Intel documents. Commander Mohrbutter reported the incident by radio to Zeebrugge. The radio message was abgehorcht by the British and the destroyer commanded Fire Drake to said sandbank. When the British warship was sighted Mohrbutter ordered the evacuation of the submarine and the readying of explosives for scuttling. Since the explosives failed to detonate as intended, however, failed to induce self-destruction. All 15 crew members survived. UC 5 was later rescued by the British and used as an advertisement for war bonds.
