Small form-factor pluggable transceiver

Small Form- factor Pluggable (SFP, colloquially known as mini -GBIC ) are small standardized modules for network connections.

SFP is a specification of a new generation of modular optical or electrical transceivers. These devices are constructed as connecting plugs for extremely fast Ethernet. The specification is for up to 8 Gb / s defined (Gigabit / second).

SFP modules fit into a SFF slot and are quickly and easily replaceable ( "hot- swap"). Network devices can therefore be easily converted to other media and are repaired in case of damage quickly. SFPs are smaller and less space than GBICs, thereby enabling the production of devices with significantly larger port densities.

Depending on the cable type ( multimode or single-mode fiber ), wavelength ( 850 nm, 1310 nm, 1550 nm or CWDM - typically 1311-1611 nm) and data rate are the SFPs in a variety of styles available. By default, this connector is used the LC. Copper-based SFP are available.

Interface types

  • SX - 850 nm, 500 m range at 50/125er fiber, 220 m at 62,5 / 125 fiber
  • LX - 1310 nm, 10 km range at 9/125er fiber
  • EX - 1310 nm, 40 km range at 9/125er fiber
  • ZX - 1550 nm, 80 km range at 9/125er fiber
  • EZX - 1550 nm, 120 km range at 9/125er fiber
  • BX - 1490 nm/1310 nm, 10 km range at 9/125er fiber

QSFP

Quad Small Form- factor Pluggable The QSFP transceiver ( quad = four times ) is an optical transceiver for a maximum data transmission up to 40 Gbit / s and should replace 4 x 10Gb / s SFP. The transceiver has a built- mux / demux and supports four multiplexed channels. These are 1271 nm, 1291 nm, 1311 nm and 1331 nm Transceiver connects via a standard port with 148- pin connector CFP and has hot- plug capability. This allows the system engineer changes to the configuration during operation. The transceiver operates with a 3.3 V power supply in a temperature range from -5 ° C to 70 ° C. The housing is made of metal and thus provide a secure shield.
