Smart Araneta Coliseum

The Smart Araneta Coliseum, known as The Big Dome is a closed multi-purpose arena in Cubao, Quezon City, Philippines. She is one of the largest indoor sports facilities in Asia.

History

J. Amado Araneta in 1952 acquired a 35 -hectare area in Cubao, Araneta Center is the enclosed Epifanio Delos Santos from the Avenue, Aurora Boulevard, P. Tuazon and 15th Avenue today.

Was built in the Araneta Coliseum from 1957 to the end of 1959. Between 1960 and 1963, was with a dome diameter of 108 meters, the biggest domed hall the world. It occupies nearly 40,000 m2. The floor area is 23,000 m2.

On March 16, 1960, the arena was opened with the boxing match between Gabriel "Flash" Elorde and Harold Gomes at the World Championships in the super lightweight.

Became internationally famous Araneta Coliseum by the commitments as " Thrilla in Manila" boxing history in the fight between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA ) held by 2008 about a thousand games in the arena. In 1978, she was the venue for the FIBA World Championships.

Ende1998 negotiated the family Araneta and Pilipinas Shell ( subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell ) through a name change with a lease running until 2008. Opted to preserve its name was the family "Shell Coliseum at the Araneta Center" proposal. Instead, the parties agreed to a oversized logo shell on the floor of the hall.

In July 1999, the Araneta Coliseum was overhauled for ₱ 200 million. In November, it was reopened. The main extensions were box seats and installing a display cube that has been enhanced by an LED display in 2003.

The most commercially successful events from 2001 to 2008 were the boxing match between Manny Pacquiao and Oscar Larios with 96.2 million ₱ revenue, a concert by Westlife before 17,887 spectators with 18.5 million ₱ and a concert by Cliff Richard before 5,647 spectators with 17.2 million ₱ revenue

In December 2010, the management installed a giant LED display with the nickname "Big Cube". The screen has a size of 22:22 m2.

Ahead of the PBA season 2010/ 11, the Araneta agreed with the Philippine communications company PLDT on the renamed " Smart Araneta Coliseum ". Included in the five - year contract were improvements to the arena by elevators and parking for up to 2000 cars.

Basketball

Main organizers are the two Philippine Basketball Leagues PBA and UAAP. So in addition to a part of the regular league games and the annual finals at the Smart Araneta Coliseum will be held.

Attendance Records

20 August 2008 saw 22.902 spectators the decisive seventh game of the final series of the PBA between " Air21 " and " Barangay Ginebra Kings ." The UAAP "Samsung Cheerdance Competition" in 2008 tracked 23,448 people
